General Finishes Water-Based Wood Stain in Espresso brings a rich, deep brown color to interior wood while allowing the natural grain to show through. Its medium-bodied, high-pigment formula spreads and blends smoothly for consistent results, even on woods such as maple and pine that can be challenging to stain. This low-odor, low-VOC water-based stain offers convenient soap-and-water cleanup while wet.
Ideal for furniture, cabinets, doors, trim, and other interior woodworking projects, Espresso stain can be applied with a brush, roller, pad, or suitable spray equipment. Prepare the wood by sanding and removing dust, then stir the product thoroughly before and during use. Apply evenly in manageable sections and wipe away excess stain with the grain according to the manufacturer's instructions. Always test the complete staining and topcoating process on a sample of the same wood species, as preparation, grain, lighting, and topcoat selection can affect the final appearance.
On raw wood, the stain is typically touch-dry in 30 minutes or longer. Allow at least 2 hours before recoating or applying a compatible water-based topcoat in ideal conditions, or at least 24 hours before applying an oil-based topcoat. Increase drying times in cool or humid conditions. Coverage is approximately 100–150 square feet per quart, depending on the wood and application method.
