General Finishes Water-Based Wood Stain in Hickory adds a rich, warm brown tone to interior wood while showcasing its natural grain and character. This medium-bodied, high-pigment stain spreads smoothly and blends easily for uniform color, including on challenging wood species such as maple and pine. Its low-odor, low-VOC, noncombustible water-based formula offers convenient soap-and-water cleanup while wet.
Ideal for interior furniture, cabinets, doors, trim, and woodworking projects, Hickory stain can be applied with a synthetic-bristle or foam brush, roller, staining pad, or suitable spray equipment. Sand and clean the wood before application, stir the stain thoroughly, and work in manageable sections. Follow General Finishes’ instructions for wiping away excess stain. Always test the entire stain-and-topcoat system on a sample of the same wood species because surface preparation, grain, lighting, and protective finishes can affect the final color.
On raw wood, the stain is typically touch-dry after 30 minutes or longer, and recoat time is at least 2 hours under ideal conditions. Cooler temperatures, high humidity, and heavy applications can extend drying times. Approximate coverage is 100–150 square feet per quart, depending on wood porosity and application technique.
