General Finishes Water-Based Wood Stain in Onyx delivers a dramatic, deep near-black finish that enriches the grain and character of interior wood. Its medium-bodied formula uses high-quality pigments for rich, uniform color, even on difficult-to-stain woods such as maple and pine. The water-based stain offers workability similar to traditional oil-based stains, with low odor, low VOCs, noncombustible formulation, and easy water cleanup while wet.
Ideal for interior furniture, cabinets, doors, trim, and other woodworking projects, Onyx can be applied with a synthetic-bristle or foam brush, roller, staining pad, or suitable spray equipment. Prepare wood carefully by sanding and removing dust, and stir the stain before and during application. Work in manageable sections and follow the manufacturer's directions for working and removing excess stain. Test the full stain and topcoat system on a sample first, as wood species, preparation, and the protective topcoat affect the final appearance.
On raw wood, the stain is typically touch-dry after 30 minutes or longer and can be recoated after at least 2 hours under ideal conditions. Cooler temperatures, high humidity, or heavy applications can extend drying times. Typical coverage is 100–150 square feet per quart, depending on wood porosity and the application method. A compatible protective topcoat is required for durability. For interior use only. Color: Onyx. Size: 1 Quart (946 mL). Follow the full General Finishes product directions and safety guidance.
